MetOcean Technical Workshop & Water Research Laboratory Site Visit

The team - Alexis Berthot, Mireya Montano, Holly Watson, Mariana Cussioli. Missing Severin Theibaut

Our Project Consultancy Team spent last week in Sydney for a focused MetOcean consultancy workshop, exploring our commercial services and the latest developments in technical modelling. With expertise spanning SCHISM, WWM, Delft3D/FM, ROMS, SWASH, XBEACH, OpenDrift and more, the sessions were a valuable opportunity to align on best practices and strengthen the technical foundations behind our coastal and ocean processes work.

A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Water Research Laboratory, in Manly, where researchers shared a range of ongoing physical modelling projects, including:

The team on the water

  • Fishway pipe designs supporting upstream fish passage

  • Dam spillway turbulence reduction testing

  • CoastSnap beach monitoring

  • Seawall overtopping experiments in the wave flume

  • Ship propeller and bowthruster scour assessments

  • Breakwater upgrade modelling in a 3D wave basin

A sincere thank you to Ian Coghlan, Mitch Harley and the WRL team for their warm welcome and insightful demonstrations.

The team also took the opportunity to explore Brisbane Waters and Broken Bay, observing local oceanographic features, coastal protection works, and marine wildlife — a valuable reminder of the real-world environments our modelling supports.

Some of the work the team saw on-site at the Manly Research Laboratory.
