MetOcean Solutions’ Forecast API allows easy customer access to accurate marine and atmospheric weather data

MetOcean Solutions, a division of MetService, recently released a Forecast API, making accurate ocean, terrestrial and atmospheric data easily available to clients and customers. "Our APIs provide high-quality weather data for anywhere in the world," explains MetOcean Solutions’ General Manager, Dr Brett Beamsley. “Our clients use this data to increase safety and maximise the efficiency of operations. Through the APIs, anyone can access forecast and historical data, generated from our suite of in-house models, which are run by expert oceanographers. Being part of MetService allows us to tap into expert meteorologists and atmospheric modellers as well,” says Brett. MetOcean is offering this service as a tiered product, which ranges from global and comparatively coarse data, through to bespoke solutions for enterprise customers created by our oceanographic and atmospheric modellers.

MetOcean has years of experience providing marine weather data for a suite of near- and offshore locations. We support clients from fields as diverse as coastal management, offshore renewable energy, ports and maritime sectors, defence and offshore oil and gas. MetService has similar capabilities and credentials for terrestrial-based clients, not just within New Zealand but also internationally through MetraWeather, making the combined offering very strong.

MetOcean Solutions' marine and atmospheric weather data have been carefully designed to support customers and operators from the smallest B2C through to enterprise customers wanting high levels of support and redundancy, with customised modelling available. Forecast data help users avoid weather surprises and optimise operations for the conditions at hand. Our APIs transform complex weather data into easily consumed formats.

"Users can quickly integrate our data into their own systems or add value to their customers' products. We’re really excited to see what people can do with this data.  There is so much talent and capability out there in New Zealand and the world that can take these data and make derived or value-add products and we are looking for ways to encourage that" adds Dr Beamsley.

MetOcean Forecast API – product features:

Large list of marine weather data

A large set of different parameters are available to consume, including all the typical parameters you would expect from oceanographic models (for example, wave parameters, currents, sea surface temperature), but also those available from atmospheric models, such as wind, air temperature, humidity, precipitation etc. A more complete list of variables is available here Variables (metoceanapi.com)

High-quality data

Customised models allow us to accurately forecast conditions at scales ranging from global to hyper-local (e.g. a berth within a port, or airport). We also interpolate data points to the requested location and time, providing more precise values at the location you want them – not at where you are told you can have them!

Fast response

Our API is designed to have a quick response - a quarter of a second to process a request, making high-value data instantly available. We’ve included a routing endpoint functionality also, where routing can be based on speed (i.e. between A and B) or locations along the way.

Highly customisable

Flexibility to select a specific forecast model or automatically follow our recommendation – the API selects by default the best model (based on resolution) available for the requested location and time.
