Marine Forecasting

What it does

The MetOcean Solutions wave and wind forecasting system offers an unparalleled, high resolution prediction of the ocean and coastal conditions for any location on Earth. Normal marine forecasts are based on large scale ocean regions and do not consider the effects of seabed shape or land topography on the local wave and wind climate. Our forecast solutions can be configured to whatever scale is required – for example resolving wave energy gradients behind an island, along a beach or into a harbour entrance.

The system is now available to commercial marine operators, as well as recreational users. Forecast data are available as graphs, maps or text at hourly intervals out to 7 days ahead. The Nowcast provides an assessment of current conditions.

The main forecast products available from the system are:

  • Wave heights of the swell and sea
  • Wave directions of swell and sea
  • Peak (dominant) period of the waves
  • Wind speeds and directions
  • Tidal elevations
  • Currents induced by tide and winds
  • Infragravity waves
  • Customised products are also available, such as directional spectra, spectral widths, shape parameters and modal estimates.

    How it Works

The MetOcean Solutions forecast system collates the latest meteorological data and deep ocean wave spectral forecasts and simulates how waves will be altered, generated and transformed from interaction with the local wind and ocean floor. Using sophisticated computer modeling, the ocean conditions are forecast for the wider region of interest, and then at increasing scales of resolution to define the local conditions.

The numerical models and international meteorological data sources underpinning the forecast system enable it to be quickly deployed for almost anywhere in the globe, whilst the web enabled reporting supports immediate deployment to your business or users. This contrasts with traditional oceanographic techniques that typically required 3 months to bring up a local model and then further customisation to deliver reporting.

    Use of this Service

All of the forecast products are distributed with a web-based interface with the following features:

  • easily accessible to commercial marine operators and their clients or recreational users from their desktops
  • forecasts can be accessed on the water using web-enabled palm pilots or mobile phones
  • easy to use, high resolution maps
  • clear visual aids such as colour coding for wave heights, and vectors for wind and swell direction enable users to intuitively identify when conditions require further attention
  • updated using the latest available information
  • XML schema on file outputs facilitating integration to other end user applications.
